Making Disclosure A Reality For Healthcare Organizations

MD/PhD Student on Apology Owed Due to COVID Policies

A few weeks ago, I wrote how the medical establisment's approach to COVID -- which includes some regular readers of this space --- violated informed consent and greatly damaged the trust Americans place in healthcare. I even went a step further in suggesting that we all got a little taste of why African-Americans have an historical mistrust of the doctor

Well, today I read a beautiful essay on this topic written by Ken Bass, an MD/PhD student from Texas.  Mr. Bass' column should not only be an important piece of our collective post-mortem review of COVID, but it also offers many nuggets of wisdom for the medical community going forward.  Be more humble.  You're smart, but you don't know everything, including what is best for me or the guy or gal standing next to me.  Science equals debate, and we Americans are big enough adults to handle the spectacle of non-uniformity in the scientific community.  Autonomy, which includes individual assessments of risk and reward, is a big deal in Western democracies.  You're not our nanny.  And always be truth tellers, be it during informed consent or post-event.

Have a great evening!

Sincerely,

- Doug
